JOVD is the Dutch political liberal youth organisation. It started life in 1949, playing its part in political life in the Netherlands for almost sixty years now. Since then, JOVD has developed into an independent, critical and professional political youth organization. Many high-profile Dutch politicians from past and present were former members of JOVD.
As liberals, JOVD values the freedom to express her own political opinions greatly and has always protected her political independency. However, due to a change in law some years ago, JOVD had to formally identify a mother party. Naturally, it choose VVD, the Dutch liberal party. Despite sharing the same ideology, VVD and JOVD operate independent of each other, both political and organizational. The headquarters of JOVD is situated in The Hague, the political centre of the Netherlands, nearby the parliamentary buildings. The organization has around 2000 paying members and twenty local branches across the country.
JOVD is both member of LYMEC (European liberal youths) and IFLRY (global network of liberal youth organizations) in which it participates actively. International activities are an important part of JOVD’s work. Many study trips and exchanges have been organized over the years, both to destinations within Europe and outside. Fellow liberals in other countries have been contacted and visited in order to learn from their views and approaches, to exchange ideas, to establish and international network of liberals and to create mutual understanding among people from different countries and cultures.
As a logical consequence of this international approach, JOVD was among the Dutch political youth organizations which decided to start Young NIMD several years ago. JOVD believes all youngsters should have the opportunity to actively participate in political activities in order to stimulate political involvement of people among all layers of the population. A well-functioning democracy in which no discrimination exists and the importance of youth in politics and society is not underestimated is what JOVD aims for, either in the Netherlands or in any other country in the world.
